Azulando

Azulando For years, Teofile Chantre laboured selflessly in the gargantuan shadow of his fellow-Cape Verdian artist Cesaria Evora. The jovial musician wrote no fewer than a dozen songs for three of her best-known albums, Miss Perfumado and Sao Vicente de Longe and the recent Voz d'Amor. But since 1993 his self-assured guitar-plucking and sea-mist voice have graced five solo albums, the latest of which, Azulando can only enhance his reputation as an all-round artist.
A quarter of a century of self-imposed exile in Paris has enriched Chantre’s palette of musical styles, which, in this album, include Cuban rumba, Creole jazz, Brazilian samba, chamber music and French voluptuousness.
“I’ve always refused to confine myself to the ethnic music groove”, claims the 40-year-old pointing to the eclectic mix of nationalities in his longstanding group. Cesaria and Bonga – the growler from Angola – also contribute to the disc, which swings from the sweet sadness of morna to the swing of coladera. Only when Chantre attempts a song in French (“Des bleuets dans les blés”, unfortunately chosen by his French label LusAfrica to be released as a single) does his voice fail to carry the pregnancy and beauty of the words.
The lyrics have become a bit of a family affair, with father Vitorino penning a couple of songs on the beauty of his Cape Verdian islands. Defenders of the disenfranchised and humble, the Chantres offer us a moving reflection in music of the saying by Portuguese writer Miguel Torga that “the universal is the local without walls”.
